Should Parents be in Newborn Photos?

By Cindy Tucey, San Jose & Bay Area's Premier In-home Newborn Photographer

I believe the entire family should be involved in their newborn baby's photo session! Some photographers only photograph the baby or they only include the parents and siblings in just a few of the photos. In my lifestyle in-home newborn photo sessions, which are done in your Bay Area home, I always include the parents, older siblings, and even the family dog in many of the photos! (I'm also glad to include visiting grandparents in a few photos if you'd like.) Of course, I also take many photos of the baby alone, including capturing the tiny details of their feet, hands, hair, etc. However, parents, siblings, and pets are an important part of the baby's life and these photos together will be treasured for years to come.

Here are three reasons why IN-Home lifestyle newborn photography is amazing:

  1. No need to pack the baby and all their stuff to drive to a studio, since I come to your Bay Area home for the newborn photography session.
  2. Lifestyle photography is more relaxed and fun, with no stiff or awkward posing (just gentle posing suggestions to help you feel comfortable and look great in front of the camera!), such that I capture more real life moments and the session is stress-free for both parents and baby.
  3. I include the entire family in my in-home lifestyle newborn photo sessions (at no additional cost), so you will have memories of everyone during this special milestone moment of welcoming your new baby. The most important reason to include the entire family is that the parents and the older sibling(s) are a huge part of your baby’s story! When I come to your home for a photo session, I’m there to capture your unique family and tell your unique story. The first chapter of your baby’s story would be incomplete without including everyone in the photos!

As an adult, I now treasure the photos I have of myself as a baby with my parents. I wish I had more photos of myself and my siblings when we were babies and toddlers! I also enjoy seeing what my parents looked like when I was born, including the clothes that they were wearing, and what our old home looked like. Currently, my elementary aged son is doing school projects that require photos from when he was a baby and toddler, and I wish I had even more photos for him.

For my newborn clients, I guarantee a minimum of 90+ photos, but often we get even more! One day your teen and adult children will treasure photos of themselves as babies with their family. And even little kids love to look at the photos from their session. This is why I now offer a complementary album for my Baby's First Year package, and all my newborn clients have the option to purchase an album through their gallery or through me. You can design the album through your gallery, or I will design the album, so it is stress-free for the parents, as you have enough to do caring for your new baby.

In conclusion, including parents (and siblings!) in your newborn photos is one of the most meaningful choices you can make. These early days pass in a blur, and your images together will hold the story of your baby’s first chapter — the love, laughter, and beautiful chaos that make your family uniquely yours. As a Bay Area newborn photographer specializing in in-home lifestyle sessions across San Jose, Los Gatos, Saratoga, Mountain View, Los Altos, and surrounding areas, I want every gallery to feel relaxed, natural, and deeply personal. When I photograph your family in your own home, we capture your baby in the most comfortable, familiar setting — the very place where your love grows every day. If you’re expecting or your baby has already arrived, I’d be honored to help you preserve this season with timeless, heartfelt images.
