10 Tips for the Best Baby Cake Smash Photos in the Bay Area

From a San Jose & Bay Area Newborn & Family Photographer

Your baby is turning one—and that calls for cake, giggles, and the sweetest celebration of this beautiful milestone! A cake smash session is a joyful, messy, and heart-melting way to mark your child’s first year. Whether you're planning an in-home session or capturing the magic of golden hour at a Bay Area park, a little thoughtful prep goes a long way.

As a newborn and family photographer serving San Jose, Los Gatos, Campbell, Palo Alto, and the surrounding Bay Area, I’ve photographed many families. Here are 10 tried-and-true tips to help you feel prepared, relaxed, and excited for your baby’s big moment:

1. Choose Cake Colors That Photograph Beautifully

For best results, stick to soft tones and neutrals. White, cream, pale pink, butter yellow, and light mint all photograph beautifully and let your baby shine. You can even coordinate frosting with your baby's outfit.

🚫 Avoid chocolate or red frosting—those shades can resemble messes you don’t want to remember in your final images (think: diaper mess or blood).

2. Keep Cake Decorations Simple

Whipped or buttercream frosting is perfect—easy to smash and fun to play with. Skip fondant, which is tough to break through and can be a choking hazard. Want to add a cake topper? Go for it! Babies often find them fascinating, and they add a sweet touch of visual interest. We can remove it when ready. Avoid small toppers that can be choking hazards.

3. Pack a Change of Clothes (for Baby—and You!)

Your baby will need a clean outfit post-session… and chances are, you might too! Bring a cozy backup outfit for baby and an extra shirt for yourself, just in case frosting goes flying (which it often does).

4. A Well-Rested Baby = A Happy Session

Plan for a calm, well-rested day. Avoid big outings before your session so your baby is fresh, relaxed, and ready for fun. A rested baby means more smiles, fewer tears, and a more enjoyable experience for everyone.

5. Bring Wipes and a Soft Towel

Cake smash = adorable, sticky mess. Baby wipes and a towel will come in handy for wiping frosting from fingers, toes, cheeks, and—let’s be honest—parents too. A quick cleanup will make your ride home much more pleasant.

6. Don’t Forget Plastic Bags

Wet/dry bags or plastic grocery bags are perfect for icing-covered clothes and used wipes. I always bring cleanup supplies, but having your own stash helps streamline the process and keep things tidy.

7. Consider Bringing a Cake Stand

A low, sturdy cake stand adds visual interest and helps elevate the cake for better photos. Choose a non-breakable option like wood or acrylic for peace of mind—no need to stress over delicate props while baby is on the move!

8. Let Baby Try Cake Ahead of Time

If your baby has never had cake or icing, consider offering a tiny taste the week before your session. This makes the experience more familiar and can help prevent confusion or hesitation when it’s time to dig in.

9. Outfit (or No Outfit?)

You can do both! Start with a sweet romper or soft, neutral outfit. Then, if you like, transition to a simple diaper cover for those classic, timeless shots that focus on baby’s personality, rolls, and gummy smiles.

10. Encourage Shy or Hesitant Babies

Some babies dive right in—others need a little encouragement. If your little one is unsure, bring a favorite toy, play familiar music, or help them taste a little frosting. Gentle encouragement can go a long way in helping them warm up to the experience.
