Tips for a Successful Cake Smash Photo Session
A baby’s first birthday is such a joyful milestone—and a cake smash session is the perfect way to celebrate! As a professional newborn and family photographer serving San Jose, Los Gatos, Campbell, Los Altos Hills, Palo Alto, and the surrounding Bay Area, I’ve learned a few helpful tips to make your 1st birthday photo experience relaxed, fun, and full of personality.
Consider Trying Cake Ahead of Time
About a week before your photo session, consider allowing your baby try a small piece of cake or a cupcake with icing at home. This gives your baby a chance to explore the texture and sweetness in a familiar environment and with no pressure, so the cake won’t feel overwhelming on photo day. It's totally up to you though, so no worries if you want to wait for the photo session for baby to try cake for the first time.
Choosing the Cake
I ask families to bring their own cake to the session, both to accommodate dietary preferences and to ensure you get the look and flavor you want. I’m happy to recommend trusted local bakers in the South Bay if desired.
Here are my top recommendations when selecting a cake for photos:
- Stick with white or light-colored buttercream frosting and cake. It photographs beautifully and is easier for babies to smear.
- AVOID chocolate and red frosting—they tend to look unappealing when messy (think: diaper or blood). Light pastels are also a lovely option.
- Skip fondant or small toppers, which can pose choking hazards. If you want to add a large topper for visual interest, babies often find them to be interesting.
- Ask for whipped or lightly sweetened frosting, especially if purchasing from a bakery or grocery store—babies often prefer something less sugary.
- Bring the cake to room temperature before the session. Cold frosting can be stiff and harder for little hands to explore.
What to Wear for a Cake Smash Session
I recommend putting your little one in one or two well-fitting outfit options. Clothing that’s too big tends to look awkward in photos, so try pieces on a few days before to ensure the clothing fits well. For the cake smash portion, minimal clothing is best. It shows off adorable baby rolls and tiny toes—and keeps the mess manageable!
For boys: soft pants, suspenders, or a diaper cover work well.
For girls: a soft dress or a simple romper is perfect.
Make sure whatever they wear is easy to wash afterwards! If baby really gets into the cake, a bath might also be on the agenda after our session!
During the Session
My biggest tip? Relax and go with the flow. Cake smashes are full of surprises—and that’s what makes them so fun! I keep the energy upbeat, follow baby’s lead, and move quickly so they stay engaged. You're welcome to bring a favorite toy to help with smiles, but often, just watching the cake moment unfold is the real joy.
What to Expect
I prefer to start the session with classic portraits and several family photos before introducing the cake; we will save the cake smash portion for the last half of your session. Not every baby loves cake, and that’s okay. Some will dive right in. Others might hesitate or dislike the texture. This is why I suggest letting baby try cake/icing a week or so prior to your session, so that baby will be more familiar when the time comes. If needed, I’ll guide you through small ways to help encourage participation—like letting a parent offer a bite or gently wiping sticky fingers. I’ll never force your baby to interact with the cake—we follow their comfort level every step of the way.
End with a Splash
Many families love to follow their photo session with a warm bath for baby, and I’m happy to snap a few photos of this sweet moment too if you have natural window light in your bathroom and time allows. Babies usually love splashing around, and these images can make cute additions to a 1st year album or bathroom wall display.
