5 Questions to Ask When Choosing a Bay Area Newborn Photographer

Bringing home a new baby is overwhelming in the most beautiful way. And when you start searching for a Bay Area newborn photographer, the options can feel just as overwhelming. If you’re trying to decide who’s the right fit for your family in San Jose, Los Gatos, Sunnyvale, Palo Alto, Mountain View, or nearby areas, here are five important questions to ask before booking.

1. Do You Come to My House?

This is one of the biggest differences between photographers. Some newborn photographers require you to travel to a studio within the first 7–14 days.

Others — like me — specialize in in-home lifestyle newborn photography. I come to you.

There’s no packing up a days-old baby.

No driving across town.

No stress about forgetting something important.

Your baby stays comfortable in their own environment. And your photos reflect your real life — your bedroom, your nursery, your living room light.

For many families, this alone makes the decision easy.

2. Are Your Sessions Relaxed and Stress-Free?

Newborn sessions should never feel rushed or high-pressure.

My sessions are baby-led and intentionally relaxed. I set aside up to two hours so there’s time for:

• Feeding breaks

• Diaper changes

• Soothing

• Natural pauses

There is no expectation that your baby “cooperates.” I believe newborn babies are perfect just the way they are. No need for them to be asleep or awake, we move gently and follow your baby’s cues. The result is calm, natural images — not stiff or overly posed photos. I will give you gentle posing guidance so that you'll feel comfortable in front of the camera and your photos will turn out beautifully.

3. What Do You Expect From Us?

This is a question more families should ask.

My answer is simple:

Come as you are.

You do not need to clean your home.

You do not need to have every dish washed (I don't judge dirty dishes in the sink! In fact, I probably won't even notice).

You do not need perfectly styled rooms.

We only use small areas with good natural light — often near a window, on your bed, or in the nursery. If a bedside table needs clearing, I’m happy to help tidy it. If we need to shift a laundry basket out of frame, we do that in seconds. I don’t judge homes. I photograph connection.

Your job is to show up and love your baby. I’ll handle the rest.

4. Can Visiting Grandparents or Pets Be Included?

Absolutely.

If grandparents are visiting during those early weeks, it’s a wonderful opportunity to include them in a few portraits that you and they will treasure forever (no extra cost!). And pets? They are family too. I love incorporating dogs — and even cooperative cats — into newborn sessions for a few photos with everyone. I even have a favorite pose I use with dogs that creates the sweetest image while keeping everyone safe and comfortable.

In-home sessions make it easy to include the full family naturally.

5. How Many Images Are Included — and What Does It Cost?

This is one of the most important questions to ask any Bay Area newborn photographer.

Some photographers charge a session fee and then require you to purchase images separately. Others include only a small number of digital files and then try to upsell you if you want more.

My sessions are all-inclusive. You receive 90+ hand-edited, high-resolution images — and probably more (I curate your gallery with all the best images from the session).

That includes:

• Solo baby portraits

• Sleeping and awake images

• Parent-baby connection

• Full family portraits

• Sibling moments

• Detail shots

• Natural feeding and cuddling images

You’re not choosing between favorites. You'll receive the full story.

Newborn photography in the Bay Area can vary widely in pricing, so it’s important to understand what’s included before booking.

Transparent, all-inclusive packages often reduce stress and decision fatigue — especially in those early postpartum weeks.

Choosing the Right Bay Area Newborn Photographer

At the end of the day, you’re not just hiring someone with a camera. You’re inviting someone into your home during one of the most exhausting and tender seasons of your life. Ask questions. Look for experience. Your session should feel calm, supported, and beautifully like you. Pay attention to whether the photographer’s work feels warm and natural to you.

If you’re searching for an in-home newborn photographer in San Jose, Los Gatos, Saratoga, Mountain View, Palo Alto, or Sunnyvale, I would love to answer any additional questions you have.

FAQ

How much does newborn photography cost in the Bay Area?

Newborn photography in the Bay Area typically ranges anywhere from $900 to $2,000+ depending on experience and what’s included, including whether the photographer has experience and is all-inclusive. My in-home newborn sessions are all-inclusive and include 90+ hand-edited, high-resolution images, so you receive the full gallery without having to choose favorites later.

How old is too old for newborn photos?

Lifestyle newborn sessions can be beautifully done anytime within the first 8 weeks. While studio photographers often prefer 7–14 days, in-home lifestyle sessions are much more flexible. Many families love weeks 3–8 when baby is more alert and parents feel more settled.

Do I need to clean my entire house before the session?

No cleaning required. We use small areas with good natural light — often near windows, on the bed, or in the nursery. I’m happy to help quickly tidy any surfaces that appear in photos. Your home does not need to be perfect for us to get beautiful images.

We don’t feel very confident in front of the camera, is that ok?

No problem! I hear this often from families. I will give you gentle posing suggestions during your session. I will also send you my Client Lounge in advance of your session to help you choose outfits and feel prepared and confident.
