Is 4 Weeks Too Old for Newborn Photography? | Bay Area Newborn Photographer
Is four weeks too old for newborn photography? Not at all!
In fact, as a Bay Area newborn photographer specializing in natural, at home newborn photography, I think around four weeks can be a sweet spot for a newborn session. I’ve photographed many, many beautiful newborn sessions with babies ranging from just one week old to nine weeks and beyond. There is no magic deadline for newborn photos, especially when you choose a relaxed, lifestyle newborn session in your own home. In fact, I think 4+ weeks old is my favorite timing for in-home newborn sessions.
Why Four Weeks Can Be a Wonderful Age for Newborn Photos
At around four weeks, babies are often starting to become a little more alert and expressive. They may make more eye contact, spend longer periods awake, and show more of their emerging personalities. At the same time, they still sleep a lot and are still quite tiny! That means we can create a wonderful mix of sleeping and awake newborn photos — tiny sleepy details, including sleeping headshots, the tiny feet shot, snuggles with Mom and Dad, and those beautiful wide-eyed moments when your baby looks right at you. I also think babies are incredibly cute at this age. They’ve had a little time to fill out while still looking wonderfully tiny and new. Plus, there can be an advantage for parents, too. By four weeks postpartum, you’ve had a little more time to recover and settle into life together, and are hopefully getting a bit more sleep than during those first few exhausting days.
Do Newborn Photos Have to Be Taken in the First Two Weeks? Not at all!
You may have heard that newborn photos need to be taken when your baby is just one or two weeks old – but that timeline is only for posed studio newborn photography, where the studio photographers want babies very sleepy and curly for tightly wrapped props and baskets. Lifestyle newborn photography is different (and in my opinion much more relaxed and fun). My newborn sessions take place in your Bay Area home and are centered around your real connection with your baby. You’ll cuddle them, hold them, feed them, soothe them, and simply spend time together while I photograph those moments. Some of the photos will be candid and others will be gently posed with my suggestions. We will likely decide to swaddle your baby for several photographs, as well as you might choose one (or more) outfits for them, we'll photograph them sleeping and awake, capture individual portraits, and include Mom, Dad, siblings, grandparents, and even pets.
Your Baby Hasn’t Missed the Newborn Photography Window
If your baby is already four, five, six, seven, or even eight weeks old and you’re wondering whether you waited too long for newborn photos, please don’t assume you’ve missed your chance. You definitely haven't. Some of my favorite newborn sessions have been with older newborns.
My sessions are intentionally relaxed and baby-led, with plenty of time built in for feeding, soothing, diaper changes, and outfit changes if desired. There’s no need to rush your baby — or yourself. Whether your baby is four weeks old or two-months old, the goal is the same: to create beautiful, natural photographs of this incredibly short chapter in your family’s life. If you’re looking for an in-home newborn photographer in San Jose, Los Gatos, Palo Alto, Mountain View, Santa Clara, or nearby areas in the San Francisco Bay Area, I’d love to photograph your family — whatever week your baby happens to be in – please reach out and I'll do my very best to fit you into my schedule as I'd love to photograph your baby during this sweet stage in their life.
