How to Prepare for Your Newborn Photo Session | Bay Area Newborn Photographer
Welcoming a new baby is one of life’s most beautiful (and overwhelming if we're being honest) seasons. The early days at home are filled with baby snuggles, newborn wonder, and family adjustment — and even the simplest tasks suddenly take extra planning. That’s why I want your in-home newborn photo session to feel easy, relaxed, and stress-free.
The best part? You don’t need to pack up the baby, diapers, bottles, or even siblings for a trip to the studio. I’ll come to your Bay Area home in San Jose, Mountain View, Palo Alto, Los Gatos or the surrounding Bay Area, so we can capture heartfelt, natural moments right where you and your baby feel most comfortable.
Here are my best tips for preparing for your in-home newborn photography session, so you can simply enjoy this special time.
1. When to Schedule Your Newborn Session
I recommend scheduling newborn sessions within the first eight weeks after birth. Because lifestyle newborn photography is natural and relaxed, your baby doesn’t need to be super sleepy or tiny for the photos to be beautiful.
- 1–3 weeks old: babies are very sleepy and curly, with those tiny newborn details parents love.
- 4–8 weeks old: babies are more alert, make eye contact, and may even smile. Parents are often more rested by this stage too.
There’s no “wrong” time — it depends on whether you’d like to capture delicate newborn features or early expressions.
2. Keep Baby Comfortable
Feed and change your baby shortly before I arrive. A full, cozy baby is usually more content. Awake photos are just as meaningful, and we'll usually get both sleeping and awake pictures during our session. Most sessions last 90 minutes to 2 hours, allowing for plenty of breaks. I often photograph feeding and soothing moments too — they’re part of your story and make for tender, real images that parents end up loving.
3. What Should Baby Wear?
Simple is best. A plain, neutral-colored onesie that fits snugly (newborn or premie size), a soft swaddle, or just a diaper works beautifully. Avoid neon colors, bold graphics, or oversized outfits. Timeless clothing keeps the focus on your baby’s sweet features.
4. Bring Special Blankets or Heirlooms
If you have a handmade blanket, family heirloom, or anything meaningful, please have it ready. Incorporating these items makes your photos uniquely yours and adds an extra layer of story to your gallery. For example, I recently photographed a baby with a beautiful blanket knitted by his mom. I've also photographed blankets that were given as meaningful gifts.
5. What Should Parents Wear?
I always include many portraits of parents with their baby. Neutral, solid colors work best, keeping the focus on your connection. Flowing dresses photograph beautifully, but casual, cozy outfits are just as lovely. I recommend coordinating around mom’s outfit so the family looks balanced and cohesive - everyone should be equally dressy or equally casual.
6. Relax and Trust the Process
As a Bay Area lifestyle newborn photographer, I know newborns can be unpredictable — and that’s perfectly normal. Crying, feeding breaks, or diaper changes are expected and built into the flow of the session. We’ll capture a mix of gently guided portraits and natural in-between moments. Often, the most treasured photos are of you simply gazing lovingly at your baby.
7. Don’t Stress About Cleaning
Truly — your home doesn’t need to be spotless. I’ve photographed families all over San Jose, Los Gatos, Saratoga, Mountain View, Palo Alto, Los Altos, and beyond, and I know parents are focused on caring for their baby. I really don't judge. If you want to tidy one thing, clear bedside tables — it makes a big difference. Otherwise, if you don’t have the time or energy, don't worry. I’ll help move items if needed, and I'll use the available light and angles to make your space look beautiful.
8. Communication Is Key
Have questions before your session? Running a little late? Just text or email me. I want your newborn photo session in San Jose or the Bay Area to feel smooth, relaxed, and enjoyable.
A Final Thought
Your newborn session isn’t just about photos; it’s about honoring the fleeting beauty of these early days. My goal is to create timeless portraits and give you a memory of a joyful, relaxed experience with your baby — right in the comfort of your home. If you’re expecting, I’d love to help you plan your in-home newborn photography session in San Jose, Los Gatos, Mountain View, Campbell, or anywhere in the south Bay Area.
