Is Three Weeks Too Old for Newborn Photos?
No—absolutely not! Three weeks is a wonderful time for newborn photos. There’s a common misconception that newborn photos have to happen within the first 7 to 10 days—but that timeline really only applies to studio-style posed photography, where babies are curled into tiny poses and swaddled in a very specific way. That approach often requires very sleepy, very tiny babies who are still very curled up. But as a lifestyle newborn photographer, I do things differently, and my timeline is much more flexible - any time in the first 8+ weeks is wonderful for an in-home lifestyle newborn photography session.
Lifestyle Newborn Photography Is More Flexible
Because I come to your home and photograph your baby in their natural environment—with you holding, feeding, cuddling, and interacting with them—there’s so much more flexibility in the timing. Your baby doesn’t have to be in a deep milk-drunk sleep the whole time. In fact, a mix of sleepy and awake images often makes for the most beautiful galleries! I’ve photographed dozens of newborns at in-home sessions, and in my experience, anywhere in the first 8+ weeks works wonderfully. A three-week-old baby is still beautifully new, but already starting to show more expression and personality. Those early yawns, stretches, and eye contact are incredibly special to capture. Is your baby even older than three weeks? No worries! Babies start to smile around 8 weeks, which also makes for wonderful newborn pictures.
What’s the “Best” Age for Newborn Photos?
That really depends on what matters most to you:
- Want to preserve tiny newborn features like wispy hair, curled-up toes, and sleepy snuggles? The first few weeks are great.
- Prefer a slightly more filled-out baby who makes eye contact and can settle into longer stretches of sleep? Weeks 3–8 are often ideal.
Many parents also feel a bit more settled by the three-week mark. You've had time to adjust, recover, and maybe even sneak in a little sleep. That extra breathing room can make the session feel more relaxed and enjoyable for everyone. In fact, some of my favorite sessions ever have happened around 6–8 weeks—the babies were alert, expressive, and still totally snuggly and small.
What to Expect at a Lifestyle Newborn Session
During your session, I’ll gently guide you with natural posing suggestions to encourage connection—nothing stiff or awkward. We’ll focus on the little moments: holding your baby in the light by the window, cuddling on the bed, admiring their tiny fingers and toes. These are the photos that end up framed on your walls or treasured in an album for years to come. And because lifestyle sessions are baby-led, we go with the flow. I set aside up to two hours so there’s time for feeding, soothing, and breaks when needed. We’ll often capture both asleep and awake images, creating a beautifully diverse gallery. I deliver 90+ hand-edited, high-resolution images—and often even more.
It’s Never Too Late to Capture This Newborn Season
If your baby is already a few weeks old and you're wondering if you missed the “window” for newborn photos, please know: you haven’t.
The truth is, the best time for newborn photos is when you feel ready. If you’re even considering it, now is the time to reach out. I promise you’ll be so glad you decided to pause and preserve these memories. The days can feel long, but the weeks—and years—go by faster than you think.
So no, three weeks (or even older) is not too old. In fact, it just might be the perfect time.
