What to Wear for Your In-Home Bay Area Newborn Session (and Why It Matters)

By Cindy Tucey | San Jose Lifestyle Newborn Photographer

One of the most common questions I get as a Bay Area lifestyle newborn photographer who does in-home sessions is:

“What should we wear for our in-home newborn session?”

The answer: keep it simple, comfortable, and true to your family’s style. But a little planning can go a long way in helping your photos feel cohesive, timeless, and full of warmth. Here's why your wardrobe matters—and how to choose outfits that photograph beautifully in your home.

1. Choose Light, Soft Tones for a Bright and Airy Feel

I’ve found that white and cream tones photograph beautifully indoors. If your home has white or neutral-colored walls, wearing similar tones can create a light, airy feel and a seamless backdrop. These soft hues reflect natural light well and add to the calm, peaceful vibe of lifestyle newborn photography.

Great options include:

• White

• Cream

• Oatmeal

• Pale gray

• Soft beige

These tones help highlight your connection without distractions—and make your gallery feel soft and luminous.

2. If You Prefer Color, Stick with Soft Neutrals

Not a fan of all-white? That’s totally fine! Just lean into soft neutrals and muted tones instead of bold colors or loud patterns.

Some beautiful alternatives:

• Sage green

• Dusty rose

• Taupe

• Soft blue

• Heather gray

• Warm brown tones

Avoid bright neons, busy patterns, and logos, as they can pull focus from the emotion and intimacy of the images. Think harmony—not matching.

3. Keep Comfort in Mind—Especially for Mom

Newborn sessions are cozy and relaxed, so it’s important to wear something you feel comfortable and confident in.

• Dresses are lovely if you enjoy them—they add movement and softness to your photos

• Pants are perfect too—especially when paired with a cozy knit or flowy top

• Postpartum-friendly fits are encouraged—choose fabrics and styles that move with you and let you snuggle freely

You don’t need to “dress up”—you just need to feel like yourself. Also, if mom wants to change her shirt or outfit part way through the session, that is totally fine with me. A new top can add variety to your gallery.

4. Coordinate Without Matching

Aim for soft coordination across the family, rather than identical outfits. Although it's fine if both mom and dad want to wear white. But here's an example of a sample palette:

• Mom in cream

• Dad in soft gray or olive

• Older sibling in a pale blue or oatmeal romper

Mixing neutrals in different textures adds dimension while keeping the overall look cohesive. The goal is always connection, not perfection.

5. Consider Texture and Layers

Clothing with subtle textures—like linen, gauze, or light knits—adds visual interest to your photos without being overwhelming.

Think soft cardigans, flowy wraps, or cozy throws. Layers also allow for variety during the session and flexibility depending on temperature and lighting.

6. Baby’s Outfit

I recommend dressing your baby in a simple, neutral-colored onesie—ideally without graphics, words, or bright colors. A snug fit (typically newborn or preemie size) works best to highlight your baby’s tiny features and natural form.

Some parents like to have a few outfit options on hand, and I’m always happy to pause for a quick change—especially after a diaper swap. A fresh outfit can add variety to your gallery. Just try to avoid clothing that hides your baby’s sweet hands and feet—we’ll definitely want to see those!

We may also remove the onesie for a few near-nude photos, which beautifully showcase your baby’s skin, fingers, toes, and that brand-new softness. These timeless images are always client favorites.

Please have a few of your favorite swaddle blankets nearby as well. Swaddles add cozy texture to your photos, and I’ll also bring a selection of my own that photograph beautifully in case you'd like to use them.

And of course, if your baby needs to eat during the session, that’s not only completely normal—it’s a wonderful part of your story. I often capture a few quiet feeding moments, whether bottle-feeding or nursing (if you'd like nursing photos, just let me know at your session), as part of your family’s connection and rhythm in this season.

Final Thoughts: Keep It Simple, Stay You

The best outfits are the ones that help you feel comfortable, calm, and connected. Your in-home newborn session isn’t about creating perfection—it’s about preserving real love, tiny details, and the beauty of these early days. If you’re ever unsure, I’m always happy to help with outfit suggestions. Together, we’ll make sure your in-home newborn photography session reflects the heart of your family.
