Your Most Frequently Asked Newborn Photography Questions—Answered

As a professional lifestyle newborn photographer in San Jose, I specialize in relaxed, in-home photo sessions for families throughout the Bay Area. If you’re a new parent preparing for your first newborn session, you probably have a few questions—here are the ones I get asked the most, along with my honest, experience-based answers to help you feel ready and confident.

When is the best time to schedule a newborn photography session?

One of the best things about lifestyle newborn photography is that it works beautifully at any age. Most of my clients in San Jose and the surrounding Bay Area of Los Gatos, Saratoga, and Campbell schedule their sessions for when their baby is between 2 weeks and 2 months old.

The timing really depends on how you’re feeling—some families want to document those early sleepy days, while others want to wait for a few weeks once things settle a bit. Personally, I find 3 to 6 weeks old to be a sweet spot: babies are still tiny but often more alert, and parents are usually feeling a bit more rested. If your baby is older, that’s totally fine too! Older babies bring more expressions and interaction, which make for equally beautiful images.

What time of day is best for our session?

I typically schedule newborn sessions for mid-morning. That’s when indoor light is at its best, and babies tend to be a little more settled. Whether you’re in downtown San Jose or anywhere in the South Bay Area, we’ll find the best time based on your home’s natural light.

What should my baby wear for the photoshoot? And what should I wear?

For your baby, I suggest a neutral, form-fitting onesie—newborn or premie sizes work best. If you have a few favorite swaddles, have those ready too! Don’t worry if you don’t have any—I always bring a collection of natural swaddles that photograph beautifully. For parents and siblings, neutral tones tend to look best in indoor photos. Think soft whites, creams, beige, taupes, and grays. Most importantly, wear something comfortable and true to your style. If mom feels good in a neutral dress, great! If jeans and a soft sweater feel more like you, that works perfectly too.

Our house is a mess—do I need to clean before the session?

No need to clean—I promise! As your San Jose and Bay Area newborn photographer, I know how hectic life is with a new baby. I never expect your home to be spotless. We’ll typically use just a few areas like the primary bedroom, nursery, or living room, and I’m happy to move a few things around if needed. If you want to do one thing ahead of time, tidying up your nightstand is helpful—but even that’s optional as I can easily help move anything in the way during the session. I’m here to make this experience stress-free for you.

Is my home “nice enough” for an in-home newborn session?

Absolutely. I’ve photographed beautiful sessions in all types of homes—from cozy apartments in downtown San Jose to townhomes and houses throughout the Bay Area. All I really need is one window with good natural light. That’s it! Of course, if your home has multiple light-filled spaces, we can use more than one location, but I promise—your home is perfect just as it is.

Can siblings join the session? Will we take family photos too?

Yes and yes! One of the best parts of lifestyle newborn photography is capturing the connections between everyone in your family. We’ll take individual portraits of your baby, candid sibling moments, and plenty of heartfelt family photos. These are often the images that families in the Bay Area tell me they treasure the most.

Does my baby need to be sleeping during the session?

Not at all. I have zero expectations for your baby. Whether they're sleeping, awake, or needing to be held, we’ll capture whatever unfolds naturally. Most sessions include a mix of both sleepy and alert photos, and that variety is what makes your gallery feel so real and meaningful. I always say these sessions are baby-led—we follow their pace. The most beautiful images often come from quiet moments of connection, not perfect poses. That’s the heart of what I aim to capture in every San Jose and Bay Area newborn session.

If you're in San Jose or the surrounding Bay Area of Los Gatos, Saratoga, or Campbell and are thinking about booking a newborn photography session, I’d love to chat and answer any other questions you have. Thanks for trusting me to document this precious season in your family’s story.
