How to Get Siblings Involved in Newborn Photos: Creating Timeless Family Memories in the california bay area

Welcoming a new baby into the family is a momentous occasion, and one of the best ways to preserve the memories of this special time is through newborn photography. But what about siblings? Including older siblings in newborn photos can make for some of the most heartwarming and meaningful images. As a lifestyle newborn photographer in the Bay Area, I've had the privilege of capturing beautiful family moments with siblings in San Jose and surrounding areas, and I'd like to share a few tips on how to get siblings involved in your newborn photos, creating timeless memories that will last a lifetime.

1. Start with Patience and a Calm Atmosphere

When photographing newborns and their siblings, it’s important to create a calm and relaxed environment. Newborns can be unpredictable, and older siblings may feel a little unsure about their new role as an older brother or sister. As a newborn photographer, I take the time to make everyone feel comfortable. This is especially important for siblings who might be adjusting to the changes in the family dynamic.

Before the session begins, I often ask siblings to show me their room or give me a tour of the house. Young children are often very proud of their space, and showing me around helps them feel special and confident. It’s a great way to get to know the sibling better and make them feel comfortable in the environment, while I can also assess the light in different rooms to determine where will be best to photograph. I also encourage siblings to express their excitement and curiosity about their new baby brother or sister, which helps them feel more involved and open to the experience.

2. Incorporate Natural, Candid Moments

One of the main elements of in-home lifestyle newborn photography is capturing moments as they naturally unfold. Siblings often have spontaneous reactions to their new family member—whether it’s a tender hug, a gentle kiss, or a curious look. These unposed moments often turn out to be the most genuine and heartwarming. I try to encourage siblings to interact naturally with the baby, and allow for those candid moments to shine. For example, I may gently guide the sibling to sit or lay next to their newborn sibling, hold hands, or kiss the baby. If the sibling is old enough and the parents think they are capable of doing so, I may ask them to hold the baby. It’s the small, quiet actions such as these that often create the most emotionally charged images.

3. Make it a Family Event

Incorporating parents into sibling shots is a great way to make everyone feel included in the moment. These family portraits, where everyone is together, can help show the bond and love between the parents, their newborn, and their older children. A simple family hug, a shared moment of laughter, or a loving kiss between siblings and parents creates an image that celebrates the unity of the family. Parents typically love these family photos too. When parents relax and enjoy the process too—when the whole family is in a relaxed stateit shows in the photos.

4. Give Siblings Something to Do

To keep older siblings engaged, I will sometimes give them a task during the session. Whether it's holding the baby’s hand, helping to adjust a blanket, or simply sitting close to the newborn, providing them with something to focus on can help avoid restlessness. Sometimes, bringing in their favorite toy, book, or comfort object can make the sibling feel more at ease and encourage them to participate more naturally.

5. Let Siblings Have Their Moment Too

While the main focus of the session is usually on the newborn, it’s also essential to capture the individuality of the older siblings. Give them a moment to shine! I always like to take a few solo shots of the sibling, including a headshot, or a picture of them doing something they love, or even an action shot where they’re playing around the baby. This way, the session isn't just about the newborn—it celebrates the sibling's unique personality and role in the family as well.

6. Focus on Connection, Not Perfection

It’s easy to get caught up in trying to create the perfect picture. But, in reality, the best photos are those that showcase genuine connection between siblings. Whether your older child is shy, curious, or full of energy, it’s important to embrace their personality and allow for a natural flow of emotion during the session. A photo of a sibling looking at the baby with curiosity, holding their hand, or kissing the baby, may not be perfectly posed—but it’s filled with meaning and love that will be cherished forever.

7. Add a Fun and Playful Element

Sometimes, I like to add a fun and playful twist to the session by asking older siblings (especially the younger ones) to get close to the baby and smell their newborn sibling, and then I ask them if the new baby smells like chocolate or strawberries. This fun little game often gets the sibling to lean in close, as if giving the baby a gentle kiss, and it frequently results in spontaneous smiles, giggles, or even full-out laughter. This lighthearted moment not only captures their adorable reactions but also helps break the ice, making them feel more comfortable and connected with their new baby brother or sister.

8. Consider Simple Props

While I often prefer a more minimalistic approach in lifestyle newborn photography, including a simple prop, like a favorite blanket or family heirloom, can add an extra layer of sentimentality to the sibling photos. These items can also help to ease any nervousness or uncertainty older siblings might feel, giving them something familiar to interact with during the shoot. While I don't bring props to the session, I'm always open to including props the parents would like to have in the photos.

9. Allow for Sibling Breaks during the Session

If siblings are nap-deprived or hungry, they may be less willing to cooperate. I always allow for breaks, and like to keep the session relaxed. While I focus on photographing mom and the newborn baby, it's a great time for dad (or grandma or another adult) to spend a little quality time with the sibling or help them to get a quick snacka quiet moment together can help reset and keep everyone’s energy positive.

Conclusion

Including siblings in newborn photography sessions is a beautiful way to create timeless family memories. It not only captures the essence of the newborn’s first days but also highlights the special bond siblings share. By focusing on natural moments, ensuring the session feels relaxed, and allowing siblings to be involved in meaningful ways, you’ll receive photographs that will be cherished for generations to come. If you're planning a newborn session, whether with or without siblings, let me know—I’d love to work with your family to create stunning, authentic images that reflect your unique story!
