How to prepare your Bay Area home for a newborn photography session (Spoiler alert: it doesn't have to be perfect)

By Cindy Tucey | In-Home Newborn Photographer – San Jose & Bay Area

Welcoming a new baby is one of life’s most meaningful and emotional transitions. It’s exciting, heart-expanding—and often a little exhausting too. That’s why, as a Bay Area newborn photographer, I want to reassure you: your home does not have to be picture-perfect for a beautiful session.

Here’s exactly what you can expect—and how to prepare (without stress) for your in-home lifestyle newborn session.

1. Don’t Worry About a Spotless House

Seriously. I’ve photographed families in homes of all shapes, sizes, and stages of chaos—from peaceful nurseries to laundry-strewn bedrooms. This is real life, and I promise I’m not here to judge your dishes, your clutter, or your to-do list. In fact, I probably won't even notice, so definitely don't worry about it. If there’s anything we need to move, I’m happy to help shift things as we go. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and present with your new baby.

2. If You want to Do One Thing… Clear the Nightstands

If you’re feeling up to it, one small task that can make a big difference is clearing off the end tables or nightstands next to your bed. We often use the master bed for cozy family photos, and those little tables often end up in the background. That said—it’s completely optional to do this in advance of the session. I'm happy to help clear nightstands during the session. No stress, I don't mind helping with this small task during the session.

3. Let in the Natural Light

My newborn sessions rely entirely on natural window light—no studio setups or flash. When I arrive, I’ll ask you to give me a quick tour of your home so I can determine where the light is most beautiful. To make this easier, feel free to open the shades or curtains in the rooms you think we might use. Typically, we’ll photograph in the primary bedroomnursery, and sometimes the living room. If you have a unique space with gorgeous light—like a bay window in the dining room—I’ll likely want to include that too. Remember: all I need is one good window to create beautiful, timeless images. If you have multiple well-lit rooms, even better—we can use a variety of spaces to add depth and variety to your gallery.

Final Thoughts

Preparing your San Jose or Bay Area home for your newborn session should feel easy and natural—never overwhelming. Your session is about capturing the love and connection within your family, not about tidying up for the camera. As your photographer, I’ll guide you through every step, from finding the best light to providing gentle posing suggestions. Whether we’re snuggling in the nursery or capturing your baby’s quiet expressions in your arms, we’ll create images you’ll treasure for a lifetime.
