When Should newborn photos be taken?
As a Bay Area newborn photographer specializing in relaxed, in-home lifestyle sessions, I’m often asked: “When’s the best time to schedule our newborn photos?”
The short answer: anytime within the first 3 months. The ideal timing depends on what kind of photos you love and how you're feeling postpartum.
Weeks 1–2: Sleepy + Curled Up
In the first two weeks, babies are typically sleepier and curlier—this is when posed studio sessions with props are usually done. If you love the idea of photographing your newborn at their tiniest and most peaceful, this can be a wonderful time for a lifestyle session too.
That said, many parents feel exhausted in the first couple of weeks and may prefer to wait until things settle a bit. That’s one of the beautiful things about in-home lifestyle photography—it’s flexible and baby-led.
Weeks 3–6: Awake Moments + Connection
After the first few weeks, babies are more alert. We can often capture a lovely mix of sleeping and awake moments, gentle eye contact, and interaction with parents. Baby yawns, stretches, and those early expressions make for a beautifully diverse gallery.
Around 4+ weeks, babies begin to hold their heads up a little more and may respond to voices or cuddles, which allows for more interactive and connected family photos.
Weeks 7–12: Smiles + Personality
At 7–12 weeks, your baby may begin smiling more intentionally and showing more personality. This stage brings out playful, expressive moments—like parent lifts, grins, and wide-eyed wonder—while still capturing all the cozy snuggles.
