When Is the Best Time for Maternity Photos?

As a Bay Area maternity and newborn photographer, I’m often asked: When should I schedule my maternity session?

Pregnancy is a beautiful, transformative journey—filled with emotion, anticipation, and fleeting moments worth remembering. Maternity photography is a way to honor this time, capturing your strength, softness, and the quiet connection growing between you and your baby.

Ideal Timing: 28–34 Weeks

Most photographers recommend scheduling your session between 28 and 34 weeks of pregnancy. By this stage, your baby bump is beautifully round and defined, but you’re likely still comfortable enough to move and pose with ease.

If you'd prefer a more prominent bump, you might wait until closer to 34 weeks. On the other hand, if you're feeling more comfortable earlier in your pregnancy, it's perfectly fine to book sooner. The best timing is the one that feels right for you and your body.

Book Early

Maternity sessions often book out weeks—or even months—in advance. I recommend reserving your spot during your first or second trimester, so we have plenty of time to plan your session without feeling rushed.

Seasons & Scenery

Here in the Bay Area, we’re lucky to have mild weather year-round. That means outdoor maternity sessions are possible in any season—whether you're drawn to golden hills, peaceful parks, spring blooms, or coastal cliffs at sunset. From Los Gatos to Palo Alto to Santa Cruz, we have an incredible variety of natural backdrops to choose from.

A Moment Worth Remembering

No matter when you book, maternity photography is about honoring this fleeting chapter. You’ll never regret pausing to document the beauty of this season—whether it’s your first pregnancy or your third. My sessions are relaxed, natural, and designed to help you feel seen, celebrated, and beautifully you.

For families planning ahead, I also offer petite maternity sessions at a discounted rate when booked alongside your in-home newborn session—a beautiful way to preserve both the anticipation and the arrival of your little one.
