Beyond the Newborn Stage: Baby & Family Photography in the Bay Area

I specialize in in-home newborn photography in the Bay Area, but one of my favorite parts of being a newborn photographer is getting to see those tiny babies again as they grow. The first year of a baby’s life brings an incredible amount of change. The newborn you once held curled against your chest begins smiling and laughing, sitting independently, crawling, standing and eventually taking those first wobbly steps. With every month, a little more of their personality emerges.

And every one of those stages is worth remembering.

Baby Milestone Photography in the Bay Area

While I photograph newborn sessions in the comfort of my clients’ homes, once babies are a little older, I love taking our sessions outdoors. The Bay Area has so many beautiful locations for baby milestone and family photography, from tree-lined parks and open fields to gardens and foothill landscapes. I photograph families throughout San Jose, Los Gatos, Saratoga, Campbell, Cupertino, Palo Alto, Mountain View, Los Altos and surrounding areas. For outdoor baby and family sessions, I typically photograph during golden hour, when the light is softer and warmer. Rather than expecting babies to sit perfectly and smile at the camera, I keep these sessions relaxed and natural. We make time for cuddles, play, exploring and all those little interactions that show what your family feels like right now.

When Should You Schedule Baby Photos?

There really isn't one perfect age after the newborn stage. Around six months, many babies are sitting independently and full of smiles and expressions, making this a wonderful age for a sitter session. Around nine months, babies may be crawling, pulling themselves up and becoming even more interactive. And a first birthday session captures another huge milestone as your baby makes the transition into toddlerhood. You don't need to wait for a birthday, though. Sometimes the best reason to schedule photographs is simply that your baby is changing quickly and you want to remember this particular version of them.

Seeing My Newborn Clients Again Is One of the Best Parts

One of the things I love most about photographing families over time is the relationship that develops along the way.

I might first meet a family in their home just days or weeks after their baby arrives. Then, months later, I get to see that same baby sitting, giggling and showing off a completely new personality. I love catching up with past clients, hearing what's happening in their lives and seeing how much their children have grown. After photographing a family through several seasons, a session can start to feel a little like catching up with old friends — only I happen to have my camera with me. 🤍

It's one of my favorite parts of this job.

From Newborn Photos to Growing Families

Babies change incredibly quickly, but photographs let us hold onto the details that otherwise become surprisingly difficult to remember: the gummy smiles, chubby hands, wispy baby hair, the way they reach for Mom or Dad, and the expressions that are completely them at this particular age. Whether you're looking for in-home newborn photography, a six-month sitter session, baby milestone photography or an outdoor family photography session in the Bay Area, I'd love to help you preserve this season of your family's life. Because your baby will never be exactly this little again — and that's worth remembering.
