How to Choose a Newborn Photographer in the Bay Area: 5 Questions to Ask

Welcoming a new baby into your family is one of life’s most meaningful milestones. It’s no surprise that many parents want to capture this fleeting season with professional newborn photography. But in a place as big and diverse as the Bay Area—where options range from studio sessions to in-home lifestyle photography—it can be hard to know where to start.

If you’re beginning your search and wondering how to choose the right newborn photographer for your family, here are five thoughtful questions to help guide the way.

1. What style of newborn photography resonates with you?

Newborn photography comes in a range of styles—from posed, studio images with props and wraps, to natural, baby-led sessions captured in your home. One style isn’t better than another—it all depends on what feels most aligned with your family and how you want to remember this chapter.

  • Posed studio photography often features sleeping babies in curated setups, occurring in the first 1-2 weeks after birth.
  • Lifestyle photography is more relaxed and natural, documenting the connection between you, your baby, and your home environment, with flexibility in timing, occurring 1-8+ weeks after birth. With lifestyle photography, parents may choose to do the session earlier to capture the baby while they are tiny, or they may wait to feel more settled and less exhausted. I've done very successful newborn pictures at both 1 week old and 8+ weeks old.

Ask yourself: Do I want stylized portraits in a studio, or candid, emotive images that tell our story at an in-home session?

2. Where will the session take place?

Some photographers work out of a studio, while others come to your home. In the Bay Area—where traffic, parking, and new-parent logistics can be challenging—many families love the convenience and comfort of an in-home session. There's no need to rush out the door with a diaper bag and a newborn. Instead, your photographer arrives while you stay cozy in your familiar surroundings.

In-home sessions also offer flexibility with timing and lighting, especially when your photographer has experience working with a variety of home environments—from bright and airy homes in Palo Alto to smaller, shaded spaces in older neighborhoods of San Jose.

And if you're feeling unsure about being in front of the camera—don’t worry. I’ll provide gentle posing suggestions throughout the session, so you’re never left wondering what to do. My goal is to help you feel natural, supported, and relaxed, so the moments we capture feel just like you.

Ask yourself: Do I want the ease of a session at home, with someone who can guide me comfortably through the experience?

3. How experienced is the photographer with newborns (and siblings)?

Newborn photography is a specialized art that requires more than just technical skill. A great photographer knows how to work with babies, fussy moments, feeding breaks, and unpredictable toddlers—without stress.

As a mother myself, and a professional photographer, I have lots of firsthand experience with toddlers and genuinely enjoy them. I make a special effort to ensure older siblings feel seen and included during the session. I’ll often chat with them first, involve them in little ways, and give them space to warm up. One helpful tip I share with parents: let your toddler know in advance that a new friend is coming to visit and take pictures of your family. It’s best not to surprise them—this small heads-up can make a big difference in how they show up and engage.

Over the years, I’ve photographed dozens of in-home newborn sessions and know how to read the room—going with the flow when needed, and gently guiding when it helps. Whether it’s calming a newborn, helping a toddler feel special, or giving parents a moment to breathe, I bring patience, flexibility, and care to every session.

Ask yourself: Does this photographer have experience with babies and siblings? Do they bring calm, confidence, and care into the home?

4. What’s included in the session, and how are images delivered?

Photographers package their services in many different ways. Some offer a short session and charge separately for a specific number of image downloads. Others, like myself and several other Bay Area lifestyle newborn photographers, offer all-inclusive full sessions with a large gallery of edited images included (I personally offer 75+ edited images and often deliver many more to my clients at no extra charge).

Be sure to ask:

  • How long is the session?
  • How many images are included?
  • Will I have the rights to print and share my photos wherever I want?
  • Are there any additional fees?

It’s also helpful to ask whether your photographer is open to including visiting grandparents or pets in the session. Some photographers charge extra for extended family members or animals, while others welcome them as part of the story. Personally, I love including grandparents (or a visiting aunt) in a few photos when they’re in town—those moments are so meaningful. I also welcome dogs or cats in several images as they are part of the family (though I typically recommend keeping them out of every shot so we can maintain a calm, baby-centered focus).

Ask yourself: What exactly is included—and are there any surprise costs for what matters most to me?

5. Do you feel comfortable with this photographer?

This may be the most important question of all. You’ll be inviting this person into your home during a deeply personal time—often when you’re running on little sleep and a lot of emotion. Do they make you feel seen and supported? Are they responsive to your questions? Do they speak with empathy and care? When you explore their website, social media, or blog, notice how their words make you feel—not just how their photos look. A beautiful portfolio is important, but it’s the feeling they create during your session that truly matters.

Personally, I see my role as more than just your photographer—I’m your new friend, visiting with a camera. I’m there not only to document your baby’s earliest days but to offer warmth, reassurance, and a calm presence during a time that can feel overwhelming. My goal is for you to feel heard and cared for, so that your session becomes a memory in itself—one that feels peaceful, natural, and authentically you.

And if you’re still getting a feel for who’s the right fit, I’m always happy to schedule a quick phone chat before you book. Sometimes hearing a friendly voice and asking a few questions directly is all it takes to feel more at ease.

Ask yourself: Can I see myself welcoming this person into my home during such a tender season?
