What To Wear For Your In-Home Newborn Photography Session: Outfit Tips For Parents, Siblings, And Baby

By Cindy Tucey | Bay Area Lifestyle Newborn Photographer

One of the most common questions I receive as a San Jose newborn photographer in the Bay Area is: “What should we wear for our in-home session?”

My answer: keep it simple, soft, and true to you. The early days with a newborn are a blend of love, exhaustion, and adjustment. My in-home lifestyle sessions are designed to be calm, relaxed, and deeply personal—so your wardrobe should reflect that same ease.

For Moms

You’ve just welcomed a new baby—comfort is key. I recommend choosing outfits that feel both flattering and relaxed, especially in soft, neutral tones like cream, ivory, taupe, or muted earth colors. These colors photograph beautifully in natural indoor light and help keep the focus on your connection with your baby.

Wardrobe ideas for moms:

  • Long, flowy dresses (great for movement and softness)
  • Knitted cardigans layered over a tank or nursing-friendly top
  • Soft blouse or loungewear in neutral palettes

If you're looking to purchase something special, here are a few client-favorite vendors:

  • Joyfolie – romantic and ethereal dresses
  • Baltic Born – flattering, bump- and postpartum-friendly silhouettes
  • Jen’s Pirate Booty – boho-inspired styles with beautiful texture
  • Amazon – search “long maternity photo dress” or “boho maxi dress” for budget-friendly finds

But if dresses aren’t your thing? That’s perfectly okay. A cozy sweater, linen button-down, or soft top paired with leggings or lounge pants can look just as lovely.

For Dads

For dads or partners, I suggest keeping it simple and polished with clean, neutral pieces that coordinate softly with mom’s outfit. Stick to solids and avoid bold graphics or logos.

Recommended options:

  • Casual slacks or clean jeans
  • A soft henley or polo in a neutral shade (cream, gray, olive, sand)
  • A fitted knit sweater or long-sleeve crew

The goal is to feel comfortable while staying true to your style.

For Baby

Newborns photograph best in simple, well-fitting outfits, usually newborn or premie sized. Well-fitting and not large is the key. A snug, solid-colored onesie in a light neutral (white, cream, or pale gray) is ideal. Avoid large graphics, neon, or bright colors, which can be distracting. We’ll also capture your baby swaddled or in soft, cozy wraps—feel free to have some favorites on hand and I will also bring several swaddles that photograph well for your use. If you'd like to do so, we can capture a few  near-nude images with the swaddle covering the diaper or diaper-only shots. Just let me know.

For Siblings

If your baby has older siblings, I recommend dressing them in soft, coordinating tones—similar to what you’d wear yourself. Keep the outfits simple, well-fitted, and free of characters or busy patterns. Neutral knits, soft cottons, and barefoot looks are perfect for younger kids.

Pro tip: Let siblings know ahead of time that a new friend is coming to take photos of the family and that it will be fun. This helps them feel included and excited to be part of the experience. It's best not to surprise them.

Final Thoughts

Remember, these photos are about connection, not perfection. You don’t want to match exactly—rather, you want to simply coordinate softly and feel good in what you’re wearing. The most beautiful images come from real moments, captured in the soft light of your home while you're simply being yourselves.
