What to Wear for Your Bay Area In-Home Newborn Session
What to Wear for Your In-Home Newborn Session
Wardrobe sets the tone for soft, timeless images and actually has a big impact on the final photos. Here’s how to keep your wardrobe simple, comfy, and beautiful for your in-home newborn photography session in San Jose or the surrounding Bay Area.
Palette & Textures that Photograph Beautifully
- Soft neutrals (white, cream, oatmeal, dove gray, sage) + gentle textures (knits, gauze, linen). If you especially want a light and airy feel to your photos, I recommend white. Some clients worry white clothing won't look good with white walls, but it's amazing for giving photos that "light and airy" feeling.
- Avoid neon, bold logos, and busy graphics.
For Baby
- Snug neutral onesie (preemie/newborn size), simple swaddle available, bare feet. Anything bigger than newborn size onesies, and baby will appear to be swimming in the outfit. Snug onesies work best. I always recommend bare feet for capturing photos of baby's tiny toes.
- Keep it minimal so tiny features shine. It's great to be able to see baby's arms, legs, hands, and feet. If you want a few photos with a hat or headband, I'm always happy to incorporate those. We can also do outfit changes if you like, typically when the diaper needs changed is a good time for an outfit change.
- If you have a favorite swaddle, have that handy as I always like to get a few photos swaddled (even if your baby is older or doesn't like swaddles), it makes for a great headshot. If you don't have swaddles, don't worry, I always bring a few that photography beautifully for your use.
For Mom
- A flowy dress or soft knit sweater can be beautiful. When choosing an outfit, be sure to prioritize your comfort and movement. I always recommend choosing mom's outfit first and then building the family's outfits around mom. Soft, flowing dresses can be beautiful for mom, but if you prefer pants or a more casual vibe, go for it! We want your photos to feel like you.
- If nursing, choose an easy-access neckline if possible. But if your dress doesn't have that, don't worry, I'm happy to give you time and space for feeding breaks. I build extra time into the session for feeding, diaper changes, or anything else baby needs.
- Optional brands clients love: Free People, Baltic Born, Nothing Fits But, Amazon (simple maternity maxi).
For Dad & Siblings
- Dad: henley/tee + chinos, perhaps a solid sweater (depending on the temperature); barefoot at home is great, or socks are fine if dad isn't comfortable barefoot.
- Siblings: soft solids; avoid character tees; add a cozy cardigan or bow/headband in a neutral if you like. Just like with baby's outfit, avoid neon, bold logos, and busy graphics.
Coordinating Without Matching
- Start with Mom’s outfit, then layer complementary tones for the rest of the family.
- Aim for 2–3 colors across the family at most.
FAQ
- Will white clothing with white walls work or is it too bland? Don't worry! White clothing and walls gives a light and airy feeling and will photograph beautifully.
- Can we wear black? Sure! If one person wants to wear soft black or charcoal that works—mix it with lighter knits so images feel more airy.
- Is barefoot okay? Yes—at home barefoot looks natural and cozy. And don't worry, we won't be getting any close-ups of your feet!
