Why In-Home Newborn Photography is the Most Relaxed Way to Capture Your Baby's First Days
Welcoming a new baby into the world is one of the most intimate and transformative experiences of your life. Those first few days at home—sleepy, tender, often exhausting if we're being honest, and full of emotion—deserve to be remembered in a way that feels real and true to you. That’s why in-home newborn photography has become the favorite choice for so many Bay Area families.
As a lifestyle newborn photographer serving San Jose, Los Gatos, Palo Alto, Mountain View, Los Altos Hills, and beyond, I’ve had the honor of photographing families in all kinds of homes—from cozy, lived-in spaces with vintage charm to bright, modern homes filled with natural light. And here’s the beautiful thing: with the right eye and experience, every home can become the perfect backdrop for your family’s story.
1. No Need to Leave the House
In those early postpartum days, the last thing you want to do is pack a diaper bag, get everyone dressed, and navigate traffic. With in-home newborn photography, I come to you. You can stay cozy, take breaks for feeding or diaper changes when needed, and just breathe. Your baby stays in a familiar environment, which naturally leads to calmer, more content moments—and that shows in the photos. Plus, siblings get to stay home and have fun in their home environment!
2. Sessions That Flow with Your Baby’s Rhythm
My sessions are unhurried and baby-led. I set aside up to two hours so there’s never a rush—we follow your baby’s cues, whether they need a feed, a snuggle, or a little quiet time. We don't spend any time trying to get your baby to sleep, as we follow baby's cues, which leads to us typically getting photos of baby both sleeping and awake to make for a diverse gallery. I like to think of myself as your new friend who comes to visit—with a camera—offering not just beautiful photos, but warmth, support, and space for you to exhale during what can be a tiring and emotional time.
3. Your Home Tells Your Story
Whether you live in a sun-filled hillside home in Los Altos Hills or a charming 1950s bungalow in San Jose, your home is part of your story. These images will serve as a time capsule—not just of your baby, but of your life right now: the nursery you lovingly prepared, the couch where you’ve held your baby through those early nights, the light streaming through the windows you’ve come to know so well. You don’t need a Pinterest-perfect home to have beautiful images. I’ve photographed in all types of spaces and know how to find soft, flattering natural light wherever we are. When I arrive, I’ll ask for a quick tour to find the best light—typically, we’ll use the master bedroom, nursery (if you have one), and maybe the living room. With a calm presence and a trained eye, I’ll create timeless, heartfelt images right where you are.
4. Siblings and Pets Can Be Themselves
When older siblings are home in their own space, they tend to relax and open up more easily. There’s no pressure for perfect behavior—just play, connection, and real moments. Pets are always welcome too, and often end up stealing the spotlight in the sweetest way. See the photo above for this sibling having so much fun!
5. Timeless, Natural Imagery That Grows With You
I specialize in natural, lifestyle newborn photography—no stiff poses or elaborate props. Just genuine connection, gentle light, and the quiet beauty of this new chapter. These images will grow with your family, becoming even more meaningful as the years go by. Not sure what to do in front of the camera? Don’t worry—I’ll gently guide you throughout the session with natural posing prompts that help you feel connected and comfortable. Nothing forced, awkward, or overly posed—just simple moments that reflect who you are as a family.
6. More Flexibility Than You Might Think
Unlike studio newborn photography, which typically needs to happen within the first two weeks, in-home lifestyle sessions can take place anytime in the first few months. Many families find this flexibility incredibly helpful—especially when navigating postpartum exhaustion, feeding challenges, or if your baby has a temporary acne flare or gassy phase. The timing is completely up to you, but I often recommend scheduling between 3 to 6 weeks, when babies are still sleepy and small but your family may be feeling more settled. That said, I’ve photographed beautiful newborn sessions with babies 8+ weeks old—it’s never too late to capture meaningful images of this season.
